چکیده

The analysis of feedback effects between continental surfaces and the atmosphere is a key element in the understanding of African monsoon dynamics. For this reason, the monitoring of surface parameters, in particular soil moisture, is essential. Satellite remote sensing appears to be the most suitable means of obtaining data relevant to such parameters. The present paper presents the results of statistical analysis of soil moisture products based on data recorded by the ERS scatterometer, over the period 1992–2006, from two sites in Niger and Mali in the Sahel climatic region. Soil moisture products were validated over these two sites using ground data measurements and ASAR/ENVISAT estimations. The soil moisture distribution during the monsoon period is described, and the temporal correlation between estimated soil moisture levels is computed. Finally, the dynamics of cells corresponding to precipitation events and high surface moisture values were evaluated in the studied regions, thereby revealing variations during the monsoon period as well as site specific trends. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Impacts of projected changes and variability in climatic data on major food crops yields in Rwanda

This paper investigated the response of major food crop yields namely beans, cassava, Irish potatoes, maize and sweet potatoes to ongoing changes in climate inRwanda. The projected daily precipitation and temperature data for the period2000-2050 used in this study were generated by stochastic weather generator(LARS-WG) from daily raw data for the period 1961 -2000. These data werecollected from ...

Evaluation of ERS Scatterometer soil moisture products over a half-degree region in Southwestern France

This paper investigates the ERS Scatterometer soil moisture products precision over a half-degree region in Southwestern France. Based on a high resolution soil moisture simulation (1km2) validated at the local scale, the ERS-scat product is assessed at its own resolution (about 50x50 km2). The study points out the suitable quality of the surface soil moisture product (root mean square error eq...

A time series based method for estimating relative soil moisture with ERS wind scatterometer data

[1] The radar backscattering coefficient is mainly determined by surface soil moisture, vegetation and land surface roughness under a given configuration of the satellite sensor. It is observed that the temporal variations of the three variables are different, the variation of vegetation and roughness are at the longer temporal scales corresponding to climate and cultivation practices, while so...

Correlation of gamma emitting radionuclides and radiological health hazards indices around Lancaster dam

Background: All human beings and living organisms are exposed to natural radiations on daily basis, which is mainly due to the activity concentration of primordial radionuclides 232Th, 238U and their products of decay together with the natural radionuclide 40K present in the earth’s crust. Materials and Methods: A total of 59 soil samples were collected around the banks and surroundings of the ...

Spatial and seasonal patterns of diurnal differences in ERS Scatterometer soil moisture data in the Volta Basin, West Africa

Soil moisture is the key variable in the hydrological cycle. In the Volta Basin, West Africa, where rainfed agriculture forms the main source of income for the majority of the population; productivity relies on available soil moisture or “green water”. Progress will depend on good management of green water, and will be strongly based on monitoring results. Data scarcity in the Volta Basin empha...
